Idol of Kaleeyamardhana Krishna of two shoulders

agadguru Sri Madhwacharya, who preached Tatvavada also installed Krishna idol in Udupi and appointed 8 saints to worship Sri Krishna on Co-operation basis (Paryaya). These saints continued their linage & became the moola purusha of 8 different mutts called Ashta mutts.

Sri Madhwacharya initiated Sri Janardhana Theertha to sanyasa to worship Sri Krishna & gave Kaleeyamardhana Krishna of two shoulders idols. Sri Janardhana Theertha continued his lineage & it is known as Krishnapura mutt. Sri Janardhana Theertha is the first pontiff / moola purusha of this mutt.

The main branch of this Mutt is in the village Krishnapura. At Udupi Krishnapura mutt is located to the northern side on Car Street.

The idol of Sri Kaleeyamardhana Krishna has an attractive pose of child Krishna with his one leg on serpent Kalinga and another leg lifted up and holding the tail of the serpent in his left hand. The right hand has the mudra of abhaya to those who are afraid of the poison. At the request of Sri Janardhana Theertha the Acharya had given another idol of Sri Ugra Narasimha also which has the pose of Sri Narasimha keeping Hiranyakashipu on his laps and tearing away his intestines. Two hands operate at the chest of the enemy and the remaining six hands hold various weapons. At the foot of this Eight-handed ferocious Narasimha is the tiny Prahlada standing with folded hands.

01. Sri Janardhana Theertha

Sri Janardhana Theertha is the 1st saint after Madhwacharya in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Janardhana Theertha is the first pontiff of Krishnapura mutt who was given Ashrama by Sri Madhwacharya himself. In Sumadhwa Vijaya, he was mentioned as ‘jananadyupamardina:’ which says he can remove doshas in one’s birth. It is possible because he is a direct sishya of acharya madhwa. Acharya gave him an idol of Kaleeyamardhana Krishna of two shoulders.

He gave Ashrama to Sri Srivatsanka Theertha and went to north India for pilgrimage tour. After handing over Peeta to Sri Srivatsanka Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Prayaga but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

02. Sri Srivatsanka Theertha

Sri Srivatsanka Theertha is the 2nd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Srivatsanka Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Janardhana Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 40 years. He did an extensive pilgrimage tour. He built one mutt in Neramballi near Kumbhasi with the money collected during those pilgrimage tours. Once one old Brahmin appeared in his dream, told him that there is a Gopinatha idol in this mutt in north east corner which was worshipped by Bheemasena in dwaparayuga and asked swamiji to install in the mutt. Accordingly swamiji searched for it by digging in the said corner and got the idol and later installed in the mutt.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Vageesha Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Prayaga but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

03. Sri Vageesha Theertha

Sri Vageesha Theertha is the 3rd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vageesha Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Srivatsanka Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 48 years. He initially did an extensive pilgrimage tour. Then lord Gopinatha came in his dream to return to Neramballi mutt and accordingly swamiji stayed in the mutt for long time to bless devotees. There is saying that his Vrundavana is in Neramballi but as per mutts kaifiyat he breathed last in Brahmavarta.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Lokesha Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Brahmavarta but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

04. Sri Lokesha Theertha

Sri Lokesha Theertha is the 4th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Lokesha Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vageesha Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 40 years. He was expert in 4 Shastras. It is believed that he wrote Vyakhyana to Vishnu Tatva Nirnaya of acharya madhwa. He was having knowledge in plants and cured diseases of many people. He cured stomach disease of one person which no one could cure it by giving kashaya (Tonic prepared by herbals & Spices) prepared by him. There is saying that his Vrundavana is in Neramballi but as per mutts kaifiyat he entered Vrundavana on the banks of river Krishna.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Lokanatha Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana on the banks of river Krishna but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

05. Sri Lokanatha Theertha

Sri Lokanatha Theertha is the 5th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Lokanatha Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Lokesha Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 14 years. He was expert in 4 Shastras. He taught Sudha and other works many times to his disciples. He was having mantra siddhi. When one mantrika with his siddhi made fire to the mutt, swamiji sprinkled water on it and the fire got let off and took its direction towards mantrika. Then the mantrika repented for it apologized to swamiji and got blessed.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Lokapriya (Lokapujya) Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Haridwar but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

06. Sri Lokapriya (Lokapujya) Theertha

Sri Lokapriya Theertha is the 6th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Lokapriya (Lokapujya) Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Lokanatha Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 12 years. He was an upasaka of Mukhyaprana and got special siddhi. When he was on travel near Neramballi, one villager tried to kill him with sword, Mukhyaprana stopped the Villager from killing. With this incident, The Villager got frightened and surrendered before swamiji and got the blessings of Mukhyaprana.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Vidyadhiraja Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Rutimikatta but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

07. Sri Vidyadhiraja Theertha

Sri Vidyadhiraja Theertha is the 7th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyadhiraja Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Lokapriya Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 10 years. It is believed that he had done bhupradikshana. He had done one special vrata wherein one paksha (15 days) he will be under fasting and in next paksha he used to take food. He followed this vrata even during pilgrimage tour.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Viswadhiraja Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Varaheeteera but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

08. Sri Viswadhiraja Theertha

Sri Viswadhiraja Theertha is the 8th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

He was called as ‘Panditadigdantigandaberunda’ He underwent complete pilgrimage tour. He did not sleep for many years and was doing pranayama for maximum time in day. He was always doing Sri Rama, Sri Krishna japa.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Viswadheesha Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana at Jagannatha Puri but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

09. Sri Viswadheesha Theertha

Sri Viswadheesha Theertha is the 9th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

He cured leprosy disease of one Brahmin devotee with his mantra siddhi. Many people who had diseases got cured by applying the leftover food of the swamiji.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Viswesha Theertha, it is said that he entered Vrundavana on the banks of river Kaveri but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

10. Sri Viswesha Theertha

Sri Viswesha Theertha is the 10th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

It is believed that swamiji was a great tapasvi. It is said that swamiji used to do very difficult vrata such as taking only very limited food daily.

11. Sri Viswavandya Theertha

Sri Viswavandya Theertha is the 11th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Viswaraja Theertha is the 12th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Once one dancer having ego, thinking that swamiji doesn’t know about dance, performed wrongly. Immediately swamiji identified the mistakes in dancing and broken his ego. Then swamiji told like this.

Sri Dharanidhara Theertha is the 13th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Dharadhara Theertha is the 14th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

15. Sri Prajnamurthy Theertha

Sri Prajnamurthy Theertha is the 15th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Because of this only he became great scholar and tapasvi. Later he travelled to Dwaraka and other places. He taught Tantrasara and other works of acharya to his disciples.

16. Sri Tapomurthy Theertha

Sri Tapomurthy Theertha is the 16th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Sureswara Theertha is the 17th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Sureswara Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Tapomurthy Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 12 years. He was famous for great tapasvi, yoga siddhi and trikalajnani. One person by name Krishnacharya tried to examine the swamiji by keeping Tondekayi inside pumpkin and gave as gift. Then swamiji immediately found the mistake and told him like this.

అంతర్జాడ్యో బహిఃశుద్ధస్త్యక్తోఽతః శుభకర్మసు

Later that pumpkin pressed by keeping it below the leg of elephant and that persons cheating was shown to the public. Then one Tondekayi came out and started troubling his stomach. Fearing this Krishnacharya surrendered at the feet of swamiji and sought apology. Swamiji then sprinkled tirtha on him from his kamandala and made him fearless.

Sri Viswapungava Theertha is the 20th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Viswabhushana Theertha is the 22nd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

23. Sri Yadavendra Theertha

Sri Yadavendra Theertha is the 23rd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

When he was on tour to Bailupejawara village near Krishnapura, one Brahmin came in his dream and asked him to construct mutt, install idol of Gopala Krishna and see that daily Pooja happens here. Accordingly swamiji installed Gopala Krishna in that place.

Sri Prajnanamurthy Theertha is the 24th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyamurthy Theertha is the 26th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyamurthy Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vidyadhiraja Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 61 years. During his childhood he did special Seva to Vadirajaru in Sode and acquired mantra siddhi and Shapanugraha Shakti. He was honoured by many kings. He was doing paata pravachana in Udupi. Once when on his way to Bailupejawara mutt, he found idol of Seeta Lakshmana Rama in the mud portion of the lake which belong to a Jain woman. Then he purchased that land, installed the idol and built a mutt which is now called Krishnapura mutt. This is around 3 Kms from east of Suratkal. Later there was also a Mukhyaprana idol existed near to this place wherein he came in dream to the same Jain woman and asked her to handover to swamiji. Accordingly she handed over this idol along with some money for doing daily naivedya. Then swamiji installed this Mukhyaprana idol in the mutt.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Vidyavallabha Theertha he entered Vrundavana Bailupejawara.

27. Sri Vidyavallabha Theertha

Sri Vidyavallabha Theertha is the 27th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyavallabha Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vidyamurthy Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 9 years. Not much information is available about him. He had developed mutts in Krishnapura and other places.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Vidyendra Theertha he entered Vrundavana Bailupejawara.

28. Sri Vidyendra Theertha

Sri Vidyendra Theertha is the 28th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyendra Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vidyavallabha Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 9 years. He was a great scholar and tapasvi. He defeated many opponents in Kashi and brought jayapatrikas. In the end he did Dana of everything and went to Ganga-Yamuna sangama and requested Ganga with true devotion to take him inside. Then Ganga swallowed him and glided away. He wrote Ganga Panchaka stuti.

He handed over Peeta to Sri Vidyanidhi Theertha. It is said that he entered Vrundavana at Ganga Yamuna sangama but it needs to be confirmed after thorough research.

29. Sri Vidyanidhi Theertha

Sri Vidyanidhi Theertha is the 29th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyanidhi Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vidyendra Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 15 years. He did pilgrimage tour of Ganga and other Kshethra’s for 3 times. He also visited Kurukshetra, Dwaraka etc. he did paata of Bhashya and others to his disciples. He was honoured by many kings. It is believed that submersed Dwaraka will be visible to eyes on one day during ‘Kapilashashtiyoga’. When that time came, he made golden Dwaraka visible to people there.

Kapilashashtiyoga* : It is one in which Bhadrapada Bahula Shashti tithi will have either Tuesday or Sunday and there will be Vyatipata yoga and Rohini Nakshatra on that day, then it will be called Kapilashasthi. This Parvakala is more than one crore solar eclipses.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Vidyasamudra Theertha he entered Vrundavana at Krishnapura.

30. Sri Vidyasamudra Theertha

Sri Vidyasamudra Theertha is the 30h saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyasamudra Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vidyanidhi Theertha and ruled the Peeta for 21 years. Not much information is available about him. It is believed that he built he built Brahmaratha to lord Krishna in Udupi during his paryaya.

After handing over Peeta to Sri Vidyapati Theertha he entered Vrundavana at Krishnapura.

31. Sri Vidyapati Theertha

Sri Vidyapati Theertha is the 31st saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyapati Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Vidyanidhi Theertha and died before his guru. So he did not rule the Peeta. He was called as ‘Padigaru Swamy’. He defeated pundits in Kashi vidyapeeta. He built one mutt in Prayaga and installed Mukhyaprana there. He took land in Padigaru a village near Udupi and built mutt there and installed idol of Muralidhara Gopala Krishna.it is believed that he used to have debate with Sri Rajendra Theertha of Puttige mutt many times. Once during such debate both became angry and cursed each other and both died in chikkapatta,

32. Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha

Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha is the 32nd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha of Puttige mutt and ruled the Peeta for 66 years. He belongs to family of Madikulnaya. After having Upanayana in 8th year he learnt sumadhwavijaya under Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha of Puttige mutt. When Sri Vidyasamudra Theertha died without giving ashrama to anyone, Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha gave him Ashrama and made him head of Krishnapura mutt. Puttige mutt being the dwandwa mutt of Krishnapura mutt saints of either mutt can give Ashrama to any of the two mutts if one the saint of any mutt dies without giving Ashrama to anyone.

After taking sanyasa from Sri Bhuvanendra Theertha, Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha learnt all Shastras from him only. Later he studied nyaya shastra in Kashi for 12 years. Kashi Timmannacharya also studied along with him in Kashi. There after he returned to Udupi and did Sudha mangala for more than 12 times. His prominent sanyasa sishyas were Viswaraja Theertha (Pejawar mutt), Viswadheesha Theertha (Sode mutt), and Lakshmivallabha Theertha (Shiroor mutt). Other prominent sishyas include Kanchi Subbaraya, Jambukhandi Vadirajacharya, and Balekuduru Venkatacharya etc.

He installed Mukhyaprana in Prayaga and Danda theertha mutts. When Sri Sumateendra Theertha of Puttige mutt gave Ashrama to his relative without any shastric background, Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha opposed it and gave Ashrama to other person and named him Sri Sudheendra Theertha. Later he won this in court also.

Later he went to Tirupati for lord’s darshan and faced some problem in having darshan. He decided to go on fast till he gets darshan, as a miracle the temple authorities came and invited him with great honor for darshan.

33. Sri Vidyapoorna Theertha

Sri Vidyapoorna Theertha is the 33rd saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyapoorna Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Sudheendra Theertha of Puttige mutt and ruled the Peeta for 55 years. He is grandson of Poorvashrama brother of Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha. After his birth, Sri Vidyadheesha Theertha used to send tirtha for the child daily thinking that he will become his successor. When Vidyadheesha Theertha died without giving Ashrama, Sri Sudheendra Theertha gave sanyasa to Vidyapoorna Theertha as per the wish of his guru.

He did his initial education under Kunjitaya Venkataramanacharya and later Sri Sudheendra Theertha of Puttige mutt. He taught Sudha and other works to many students by giving food and clothes. He did Krishna paryaya for 3 times. During his paryaya, he built Suryashale, Chandrashale, Simhasana and outside gopura. He also submitted golden pallakki to Udupi Krishna. He renovated Padigaru mutt, danda theertha mutt, Bailupejawara mutt. He died when he was 62 in the afternoon at 1 pm on the day corresponding to Phalguna Bahula Padya after giving dana to Brahmins.

34. Sri Vidyaratna Theertha

Sri Vidyaratna Theertha is the 34th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.

Sri Vidyaratna Theertha took Ashrama from Sri Sudheendra Theertha of Puttige mutt and ruled the Peeta for 36 years. He was son of Poorvashrama sister of Sri Vidyapoorna Theertha. His parents were Smt Kamalamma and Sri Ganapayya Tantri. He had born in the year 1920 on Vaishakha Amavasya. He got Upanayana in eighth year in Sode. He learnt English and Hindi in Poorvashrama. He has learnt Sudha and other Shastras under Sri Vidyapoorna Theertha. He took sanyasa from Sri Sudheendra Theertha of Puttige mutt. He learnt higher education in Kashi for few years. He did Badari yatra thereafter. He has done his first paryaya in the year 1942. Even though country was facing war like situation, he conducted paryaya in grand manner. He published monthly magazine ‘Srikrishnaparyayaprakasini’ during his first paryaya.

35. Sri Vidyasagara Theertha

Sri Vidyasagara Theertha is the 35th saint after Sri Janardhana Theertha in the guru parampare of Krishnapura mutt.
