Sode Matha

Sode Mutt

Idol of Bhuvaraha

sode - bhuvaraha

sode – bhuvaraha

Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya, who preached Tatvavada also installed Krishna idol in Udupi and appointed 8 saints to worship Sri Krishna on Co-operation basis (Paryaya). These saints continued their linage & became the moola purusha of 8 different mutts called Ashta mutts.

Sri Madhwacharya initiated Sri Vishnu Theertha to sanyasa to worship Sri Krishna & gave Sri Bhuvaraha idols. Sri Vishnu Theertha continued his lineage & it was known as Kumbhasi mutt later became famous as Sode Mutt. Sri Vishnu Theertha is the first pontiff / moola purusha of this mutt.

Before Sri Vadirajaru the main branch of this Mutt was in the village Kumbhasi near Shimoga & was called Kumbhasi Mutt. During Sri Vadiraja’s period Arasappa Nayaka of Sode honoured Vadiraja Swamiji by gifting land properties at Sode. Sri Vadiraja Swamiji constructed a big Mutt there and then onwards became famous as Sode Mutt. The main branches of all seven Mutts are in the villages of South Kanaka. But that of Sode Mutt alone is in the North Kanaka District. At Udupi Sode mutt is located at southern side of Car Street & left side of Sri Krishna temple.

The Sri Bhuvaraha idol is known for its remarkable iconography with Bhudevi on one thigh and the other leg supporting on the hood of serpent. Along with Bhuvaraha idol Sri Vadiraja included worshipping Sri Hayagreeva idol in the mutt. Sri Hayagreeva is the presiding deity of knowledge and accordingly the idol has in hand the mudra of knowledge, book, rosary and conch. Acharya madhwa gave him Vysamushti which he brought from badari which is getting worshipped even today in Sode mutt.

Sri Vishnu Theertha is the first pontiff of Sode mutt who was given Ashrama by Sri Madhwacharya himself. He is the own brother of Madhwacharya in Poorvashrama. When acharya madhwa wanted to take sanyasa, his parents opposed him. Then acharya madhwa told them that, I will take sanyasa only after they get another son. As told by him, his parents got one more son and he is the one who took sanyasa later from acharya madhwa and got renamed as Sri Vishnu Theertha. In Sumadhwa Vijaya, his name is given utmost importance. He participated in Yagna during installation of Krishna idol in Udupi. After the death of parents of Madhwacharya, he decided to take sanyasa and went to acharya madhwa at Vishnumangala where acharya was observing Chaturmasa and asked him to give sanyasa. As it was Chaturmasa acharya madhwa told him to wait till its completion and directed him to go to Pajaka and will give ashrama there. So he went to Pajaka, took sanyasa from acharya and named him Vishnu Theertha. He was always involved in paata, pravachana etc. and acquired mantra siddhi. He went to north India and did tapas at Harischandra parvata without taking any food. When his disciples requested him to take food, he took only milk and that too for five days once. Later he left this also and was taking only leaves and water. He acquired yoga siddhi. When acharya madhwa disappeared to badari, his disciples requested him to come to Udupi and he came to Udupi. He stayed in Udupi for some time, handed over peeta to Sri Vedavyasa Theertha & later went to Subramanya and started doing tapas in Kumaraparvata Mountain & disappeared from public eyes.

It is believed that when madhwa philosophy is in danger, he will come back to public life from Kumaraparvata and re-establish dwaitha philosophy. The incident of entering Kumaraparvata is mentioned in one manuscript.
